Der Volksfreund first appeared on 7 April 1848 as a „Titel einer neuen Zeitschrift, welche unter der Leitung einer Assoziation von Bürgern erscheint, und die Alles umfassen wird, was auf unsere Tagesgeschichte Bezug hat". On 28 July 1848, Der Volksfreund merged with the Echternacher Grenzbote and Franz Schömann took over as editor and printer.Der Volksfreund was last published on 29 June 1849 and continued on 1 July 1849 under the name of Der Patriot.
On 5 November 1848, the title entered literary history with the satirical poem “D’Vulleparlament am Gréngewald” that Edmond de la Fontaine called Dicks (1823-1891), son of the Luxembourg prime minister wrote about the newly elected democratic parliament.
