Description
The Obermosel-Zeitung (1881-1941, 1945-1948) was founded in Grevenmacher by the printer Joseph Esslen (1850-1937). Starting as a regional publication, it gained in importance over the years and proudly proclaimed that it was "die meistverbreitete Zeitung des Grossherzogtums Luxemburg" in 1909 and "die grösste Zeitung des Landes" in 1910; it certainly was, considering its size of 64,5x49 cm.
Esslen tried for several years to publish an edition for the south of Luxembourg entitled "Spezial-Ausgabe für den Kanton Esch a. d. Alz. und nächste Umgebung" (1891-1898); "Sonderausgabe für den Kanton Esch und seine nächste Umgebung" (1898-1914).
The Obermoselzeitung offered its readers a number of supplements, including:
- Das Vaterland. Organ für luxemburgische Geschichte, Kunst und Literatur, 1889 von Adam Reiners (1849-1919) publiziert;
- Die Heimat in Wort und Bild zwischen 1925 und 1928;
- D'Letzeburger. Beilage für Heimatgeschichte, Volkskunde und Familienforschung zwischen 1936 und 1939.
After an interruption during the Second World War, the newspaper continued from July 2nd 1945 until its merger with the daily D'Union on the 5th of April 1948, to become the Lëtzebuerger Journal.
